On January 12, 2009, I had the privilege of being sworn in for my second term as the State Representative for District 137. It was a humbling and thrilling day.
Humbling because I know it took the sacrifice of so many to get me in this position, humbling because so many courageous, wise and respected men and women came before me in the House chamber, humbling because I know in God's huge world that I am just a speck of sand. Yet thrilling because I could share this moment with my family and friends, thrilling because of the many intellectual and personal challenges ahead of me, thrilling being a part of the energy of our state government.
I hope that you will continue to pray for me:
that I might be wise in the votes that I cast;
that I might be sympathetic to the needs of those less fortunate;
that I might be smart in the relationships that I build;
that I might have vision to see above the partisan politics and do the Right Thing - even if it hurts me politically;
that I would stay grounded, always remembering that I am not near as important as I think I am;
that I would not get addicted to caffeine as I try and stay awake during endless meetings;
that I might know how to balance the needs of my district with the needs of the entire state;
that I won't forget (as many have before me) that my family is, and always will be, my top priority;
that I wouldn't forget that the people of District 137 voted me into this office, not lobbyists, special interest groups, or even the leadership in the House;
that I would be prudent in making the best use of my time with the multitude of requests for meetings, forums, and gatherings;
that I would not develop road rage as I deal with Atlanta traffic every day for three months;
that I might be a Representative that you can be proud of!
I am going to Atlanta because of the incredible support that I received from all of you. Thank you again! I understand my obligation is to REPRESENT you. Please let me hear from you by email, phone, and letters. I want to know what your thoughts are on issues that are important to you, what your responses are to items that are being debated in Atlanta, and what the pulse is here in Macon. I need your help to stay connected.
