Peake pushes for tax relief
Allen Peake announces he will push for legislation to relieve Bibb County residents of the stranglehold of property taxes. Modeled after the successful Stephens-Day property tax relief that has Chatham County residents most grateful, Peake’s proposal would follow the same formula. The legislation would prohibit tax assessors from adjusting the value of residential property on the local tax digest even though the actual value of the property has increased in value.
The tax relief legislation for Bibb County would basically allow for a homesteaded property to continue increasing in valuation while the owner will find that their tax exemption will increase along with the rate of increase. By freezing the tax valuation, Macon-Bibb County and the local school board, will not keep expanding their funding without having to vote on a tax increase. This legislation would eliminate the so-called “backdoor tax increases.” Property tax freezes of this nature have withstood court challenges, most noticeably in Muskogee County.
The Stephens-Day property tax relief legislation passed overwhelmingly in a Chatham County referendum in 2000. There are now over 70 versions of this legislation affecting municipalities, counties and school boards through-out the state.
“With the release of new valuations from the Bibb County Board of Assessors, most residents have seen their property values increase and in turn, their tax burden increase,” said Peake. “By implementing legislation like this, seniors and those on fixed incomes will not lose their house on the court house steps. I have communicated with the author of this legislation State Rep. Ron Stephens (R-Savannah) and have discussed the how’s and where’s of this legislation and I am prepared to work with Bibb County legislators to enact this meaningful property tax relief”
